(CNN) -- Former first lady Nancy Reagan was taken to a suburban Los Angeles hospital "as a precaution" Sunday after a fall at her home, an aide said.

Nancy Reagan shares a laugh with CNN's Anderson Cooper on January 30 before the Republican debate at the Ronald Reagan Library.

The 86-year-old Reagan will remain overnight for observation at a hospital in Santa Monica, California, said Joanne Drake, chief of staff for the Reagan Foundation.

Her office said the former first lady was in good spirits.

"She is doing well and is visiting with friends in her room," Drake said in a written statement issued Sunday night.

Drake told The Associated Press that Reagan is staying in the same room where former President Ronald Reagan stayed after he broke his hip at home in 2001.

Reagan is the widow of former President Ronald Reagan, whose 1981-1989 administration is revered by the current Republican party. The Reagans were married for 52 years before his death in 2004, which followed a decade-long battle with Alzheimer's disease. E-mail to a friend E-mail to a friend
